The French capital gets its name, “City of Light”, from the numerous sources of light that have had a presence in the city since the 17th century. As such, with the approach of the holidays, it’s only natural that Paris would be the place to go to see Christmas lights. This annual spectacle thrills young and old alike with a multitude of activities and events which are offered throughout the city.
Starting the 20th of November, Paris is adorned in a luminous coat which shines in various ways throughout its various districts. Here, we present you with those most worth seeing this holiday season.
The Champs Elysées
The most beautiful street in the world is draped in luxurious Christmas decorations which light up every night from 5pm until 2am. From the Arc of Triumph to the Place Concorde, via Avenue Montaigne, you can enjoy a light show that’s almost magical. The trees twinkle with light, Christmas trees sparkle, and shops reveal their most beautiful window displays.

This year’s theme in Bercy takes you on a visit to an illuminated forest which holds many little secrets. The walk leads you down geometric tree-lined paths. Bright branches grow on the trees in which Bercy’s little secrets may be hidden. Allow yourself to be carried away by the influx of visitors and experience a state-of-the-art visit which leads to the city’s main attraction: Bercy’s giant fir tree.
Baron Haussmann’s route takes you through five districts throughout the Christmas season: Madeleine, Europe, Faubourg-du-Roule, Faubourg-Montmartre and Chaussée-d’Antin.
The boulevard features classic Christmas lights and is something you don’t want to miss! If the garlands of light running through the streets hint at the colors to come, it’s the windows of the largest shops that’ll really grab your attention. But don’t leave it at that! This magical show continues on to the Galeries Lafayette and ends with the traditional gigantic Christmas tree which climbs to the top of the dome.
At Christmastime, the Beaugrenelle district showcases its famous shopping center which transforms into an enormous neon sign from December 1 to 24. For almost a month, department stores are open even on Sundays, and when they close, their magnificent shop windows take over at night.
The district’s centerpiece is a 13-metre high hot-air balloon with nearly 20,000 points of light. The visit takes on a new dimension when the aerial balloon show takes place under multi-colored lights to close out the Christmas parade. A real attraction you don’t want to miss!
Paris will amaze you during the Christmas and New Year holidays with its decorations which vary from one district to another. Some will appreciate the 15th Arrondissement, where Rue du Commerce often revisits Christmas lights in a slightly different way.
